The AI-powered trade regulation intelligence built by Besso is inspired in many ways by my research. I have therefore been a part of the journey from the very beginning.

How Besso relates to my Research
Besso's CEO is my husband, Philip Sieber-Gasser. He knew the pain points of companies from his prior role as an investor, and he heard me complain about the frustrating underutilisation of trade preferences. Especially for developing countries, international trade regulation offers a considerable amount of preferential treatment and regulatory flexibility to increase the value-added inclusion in global value chains. Due to a lack of information, however, these opportunities are rarely used.
Inspired by his experience and my research, Philip went on a search for suitable data sources. He soon discovered how underutilisation also affects multinational corporations, which miss millions of dollars in tariffs savings due to the increasing regulatory complexity in supply chains and their inability to keep track with relevant regulatory changes worldwide.
Besso builds the most comprehensive applied source of trade regulation intelligence worldwide. In this endeavour, it benefitted from my experience in empirical legal research and in building large trade databases myself. Besso combines trade law expertise with AI to identify regulatory patterns and reliably interpret the regulations. I continue to support Besso with my expertise in empirical legal research and with bridging the interpretation gap between trade regulation data and machine learning.
My Role as Head of the Academic Board
I am serving as the Head of the Academic Board of Besso. My role is to connect Besso with relevant academic expertise, to provide expertise myself when needed and to provide – together with the board – from time to time an academic outside perspective on Besso's day-to-day business. The academic board is consulted when there is a specific research and innovation-related need, and for gaining insights on where international trade regulation might be moving in the nearer future so that Besso can adjust its strategies accordingly.
We are here to ensure that Besso's work remains anchored in latest research in trade compliance and that it continues to innovate to remain at the forefront of AI-powered legal-tech.
